Thomas Campbell is prolific. He’s a film maker (The Seedling 1999, Sprout 2004, The Present 2009), painter, photographer, sculptor, and all around purveyor of what’s good about surf and skate culture – creativity, fun, vibrance, rawness, and expression.
His work comes across as a manifestation of all of these attributes. From single fin surfboards sprayed in lively shades of pink, to deep collections of photographs from Morocco (Seeing Fatima’s Eyes: Surf, Life, Stuff, Morocco, North Africa), to textile based mosaics, there is a bit of everything in his art – sometimes displayed on the same wall at the same time.
The upcoming exhibit, Overwhelming Color Fast, will include a wide array of mediums. As it states on the Mollusk website: “Campbell will be totally filling The Mollusk SF gallery (floor, walls, ceiling) with new works and a large smattering of pieces from his dusty archive (photos, paintings, video installation, sculptures, ceramics, prints, weird sleds, and other junk).”
The show runs from November 19 to December 15, 2016. The opening reception will happen on November 19 and feature “projected visuals” as well as live music by Tommy Guerrero and others.
