A while back The Good Brine posted a video entitled The Roach Tail by Juddy Productions (Ben Judkins) that focused on a surfboard made from cigarette butts. The project seemed to us like a great way to publicize the issue of pollution in the ocean – specifically the easily underestimated problem of discarded cigarette butts. As it turns out, we were not alone in our intrigue. Since it was created and publicized by Ben and Taylor Lane (the craftsman involved), the Cigarette Surfboard has taken on a PR life of its own, capturing the attention of mainstream news outlets and environmental enthusiasts alike.
Not surprisingly the duo behind the project are seeking to ride the momentum further and expand their piece into a full length documentary on the subject. And why not continue to shed light on the issue in a creative way? In our estimation, all angles of approach are needed to inform the public and combat the spread of pollution in the ocean.
As part of a campaign to raise funds for their project and awareness around the issue Taylor and Ben will be setting out on an international tour and exhibiting the cigarette surfboard along the way. One of the first stops will be at Halocine Studio in San Anselmo (Marin County) on February 10, 2018 from 5:00 to 7:00PM. The free event will feature an art auction, video screenings, raffle, Q&A, and good vibes.
