A black light sea urchin mandala, a starfish crucifixion sculpture, a sardonic painting entitled Whale Evacuation Plan, and other representations of a perilously anthropocentric connection between humanity and sea life make up some of the subject matter of Charlie Callahan’s work.
Callahan studied art at Columbus College of Art and Design in Ohio before settling into the art scene along the northern California coast. He’s been exhibiting work in the San Francisco Bay Area since the early 2000’s and currently has a show going up at Mollusk Surf Shop in San Francisco.
Callahan uses video, pigment, sound recordings, sculpture, recycled wood, and other found materials to create installations and expressions that aim to generate a full sensory experience. As creative and abstract as it is telling, his work challenges viewers to reflect on their relationship with the ocean and its inhabitants as well as their existential stance in the natural world.
His upcoming show, Phosphorescence, is slated to run from March 25th to May 6th, 2017 with an opening this Saturday at Mollusk Surf Shop from 7:00 to 10:00 PM. The reception will include music from Callahan’s band, Fantasy Bracelet, and “boast a collection of sculptures, recycled and found objects, prints, and blacklights.”
