Surf movies, music, food, topical discussions, and good vibes in Hawaii – what’s not to like about the 10th annual Honolulu Surf Film Festival? This event, put on by the Honolulu Museum of Art, runs through the entire month of July and features a wide variety of cinematic expression.
From contemporary shorts to full-length classic surf films and ocean based documentaries there’s a bit of everything being offered. A few of the newer stand-outs include Proximity, Under An Arctic Sky, Given, Fishpeople, and Distance Between Dreams. On the retro side of things Morning of the Earth, and The Endless Summer will be playing. In honor of the late founder of Surfer Magazine, John Severson, there will also be a free showing of his culture laden epic, Pacific Vibrations.
A couple surprise selections relate directly to the Bay Area and Central California surf scene. Great Highway, for example, documents the history of surfing in San Francisco. Fishpeople includes a segment on MeWater Foundation, a nonprofit that “works to address adjustments of trauma and stress in young people from backgrounds of poverty and violence” in the Bay Area. Vertical Lines, by Perry Gershkow and Kyle Buthman, focuses in on the coastal region between San Francisco and San Louis Obispo, showcasing the local talent that thrives there.
