Andy Davis is known for creating stylish surf-steeped animation based imagery that hones in on the essence of wave riding and its surrounding culture. Powerful lines swoop through his work, culminating in seemingly simple abstract compositions that flow through vibrant colors straight off the canvas. His subject matter includes figures crouched in styled out tube stance, rail grab top turn carves, noserides in fantasy locations, or all of the above without the wave or the board. As he described his work from a previous show:
I had a little bit of a loose idea, and that was taking the literal sense out of a surfing image and making it a little more abstract and free flowing. There was no wave there was no surfboard, it was just sort of energy and motion and a lot of color.
His art has been displayed in galleries, surf shops, major magazines, advertisements, and collaborations with companies like Billabong, Patagonia, Vans, RVCA, Roxy, Free, Byrd and Ando & Friends, Captain Fin, and Joel Tudor Surfboards. He’s also provided art for nonprofits like Waves 4 Water, and organizations that contribute to social advancements from within the surfing industry including the ISA Adaptive Surfing Championships.
The short video below further documents the work Davis has been doing and the impetus behind it. Watch it to learn more about him and the uplifting surfy world his expressions depict.
The upcoming Andy Davis solo show, entitled “Eye Yi Yi” is set to run from May 26-July 1, 2017 at the Trancas Country Market in Malibu. There will be an opening reception on Thursday May 25 from 6:00 to 10:00 PM.
