As if it wasn’t radical enough that Courtney Conlogue has been winning events and vying for a world title on the Women’s WSL Championship Tour since she qualified in 2011, she’s also a talented artist. With a painting on exhibition in Women of Surfing: Art & History and the onset of the 2017 Vans US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach these two skill sets are coming together like a perfect pierside double-up.
According to Kate Hoffman, Director of the Huntington Beach Art Center, Women of Surfing: Art & History “presents both an aesthetically beautiful and historically significant look at the world of women in surfing.” The show spotlights progression on many levels. From early documentation of women’s surf competition, to equipment and technical developments, to sheer ocean based photography and expression, there’s a nice variety of mediums at play. Conlogue’s painting not only fits perfectly into the main theme of the show, but adds depth to it.
Her painting combines a rendering of an enticingly powerful right-hand tube with elements of abstraction like expressionistic brush strokes, stormy colors, and negative space. A photo of her working on it recently surfaced on social media, garnering attention, and cluing her fans into the fact that, on top of everything she’s accomplished in the water, she’s a highly skilled painter.
With her work in the spotlight and all the hype that typically surrounds the Vans US Open of Surfing, it will be critical for Conlogue to shift focus back to surfing when it counts. She’s currently ranked number four in the world and coming off a huge win at the Outerknown Fiji Women’s Pro. The Vans US Open of Surfing is the sixth stop on the women’s tour, and the world title race is heating up. Hopefully Conlogue can carry momentum from both of her passions, and continue to make the most of an amazing ride.
Women of Surfing: Art & History runs from July 22 – September 2, 2017 at The Huntington Beach Art Center.
2017 Vans US Open of Surfing starts July 29, and wraps up August 6, 2017.
