Puerto Escondido holds one of the world’s best big wave spectacles. Giant lines of swell roll in, pitching up into oversized, throaty, sometimes makable barrels before detonating mercilessly on near-shore sandbars. It’s a world class proving ground for those brave enough to test themselves against nature’s wrath. Because the action takes place close to shore it makes a great venue for big wave competition.
The 2018 Puerto Escondido Cup put on by Surf Open League did not disappoint. Held at the famed Mexican beach break, the competition took things a notch further than typical big wave events by showcasing a women’s division (the first ever in Latin America). It proved to be not only historical, but intense and inspirational.
There were wipeouts, giant tube rides, lead changes, and adrenaline induced smiles for days. After putting up a 9 point ride for a heavy tube Bianca Valenti initially took the lead. She was temporarily bested, however when Isabelle Leonhardt came screaming out of a giant backside barrel of her own. This left Bianca needing another score. Although conditions were tricky she managed to get a back-up wave before the heat ended. When the foamy spray settled, Valenti was still on top, reveling in a well deserved victory at the first ever women’s big wave event at Puerto Escondido.
In the men’s division big wave phenom, Lucas Chumbo came away with the win. Chumbo has been on a tear recently, gaining widespread recognition for his prowess and victories in locations like Nazare’ and Mavericks. At the Puerto Escondido Cup he overcame Jimel Corzo, Angelo Lozano, Sasha Donnanno, Jafet Ramos, and Jojo Roper to take top honors.
Below are some highlights from the women’s side of the event:
