“Proximity” – Taylor Steele’s Film Tours Near And Far

Taylor Steele needs no introduction. He’s been dropping culture shaping surf films since the early 1990s. The term “momentum generation” which refers to some of the world’s most influential surfers to come out of the 90s (including Kelly Slater, Rob Machado, Taylor Knox, Shane Dorian, Kalani Robb, Benji Weatherly, Ross Williams, Chris Malloy, and Rizal Tanjung), was coined based on the films Momentum and Momentum II by Steele. The list of projects he’s done since then is too long to list here so we’ll jump straight into talking about his latest work, Proximity. Here’s the trailer:

As with many of Steele’s films, Proximity has a theme to it –  in this case matching up top tier rising surf stars with influential legends that came before them. The notable pairings include Kelly Slater with John John Florence, Shane Dorian with Albee Layer, Rob Machado with Craig Anderson, and Dave Rastovich with Stephanie Gilmore. The idea behind Proximity was to film the pairs of uber-talented surfers interacting with each other on a human level and blowing up in the surf together. The outcome, as might be expected from a Taylor Steele piece, is mesmerizing.

Proximity is set to launch an international screening tour in May, with a stop at San Francisco’s Balboa Theater on May 24, 2017. Click here to buy tickets to this showing and view other dates and locations for the tour.
