The nonprofit organization Save The Waves (STW) is about more than just saving waves. According to their website they are “dedicated to protecting coastal resources through a unique combination of protected areas, economics and direct action.” Water quality, marine pollution, endangered reefs, public access, and climate change are a few of the issues they take on while working to preserve surf rich locations.
While based in Santa Cruz, California their reach is international. They have surfing reserves established and proactive campaigns running in California, Mexico, Chile, Brazil, Australia, and Ireland. In order to sustain their efforts they host various events throughout the year, including a film festival.
The 9th annual Save The Waves Film Festival is currently touring the US West Coast with a stop in San Francisco on Saturday, November 18th at Victoria Theatre from 6:00 PM – 11:00 PM. The event will include “world premieres of surf, adventure, and documentary films, as well as live music from XXXX and a raffle at intermission.” For a complete list of tour dates and locations click here.
