The International Ocean Film Festival (IOFF) based in San Francisco is entering its fifteenth year of operation. On offer, once again, is a great series of films ranging in category from “marine science and industry to sports and adventure.” Program 5, the surfing section of the festival, is set to run on Friday, March 9, 2018. Some of the surf based films being presented include Reefs At Risk, The Big Wave Project, Cuban Wave Riders, and The Agave Gun.
Reefs At Risk focuses on threats to reefs in Hawaii including tourism and chemically saturated sunscreens. The Big Wave Project follows some of the world’s gnarliest watermen and their adventures in massive surf. As the name suggests, Cuban Wave Riders takes a look at a burgeoning surf scene in Cuba. The Agave Gun hones in on renowned shaper Gary Linden and his experimental work with agave as a sustainable surfboard building material.
The festival kicks off on March 8, 2018 with a waterwomen themed opening night party, screenings of She Is the Ocean, a short titled Stars, and biographical documentary about Kim Webber (the first women to swim from San Francisco to the Farrallon Islands) Kim Swims.

According to their website, “The IOFF is a registered 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization made possible by the spirit, passion, and hard work of our board of directors, screening committee, and numerous volunteers.” Its mission is to inspire “people to appreciate and care for the ocean by revealing its wonders through independent films.” If you want to get involved or learn about volunteering with the IOFF go to this site.
While a few films will show at the Lark Theater in Larkspur and Roxie Theater in the Mission District, most will be screened at Cowell Theater, in the Fort Mason Center.
