Green Friday Pays Off

Patagonia made huge strides on the day after Thanksgiving, helping to turn Black Friday green by donating 100% of sales to grassroots organizations focused on protecting the environment. The company raised about $10 million, exceeding expectations by a long shot and empowering those on the front lines of environmental stewardship.

Some of the ocean and marine life related organizations that stand to benefit include:

All One Ocean

“All One Ocean’s mission is to educate people about the destructive impacts of our trash by providing a simple way for beachgoers, any time they visit the beach, to help clean up our Ocean, beautify beaches and prevent needless death and suffering to marine life.”

Save The Waves Coalition –

“Save The Waves protects coastal ecosystems around the world in partnership with local communities, utilizing a unique combination of protected areas, economics, and direct action.”

Richardson Bay Sanctuary

“Richardson Bay Audubon Center & Sanctuary staff and volunteers focus on waterbird conservation in our Sanctuary and northern San Francisco Bay and use our site as an outdoor classroom to inspire and educate our community.”

The Greater Farallones Association

“The Greater Farallones Association supports the efforts of NOAA and the Sanctuary with citizen science programs, education for kids, and funding for noted researchers.”

The Marine Science Institute –

“The Marine Science Institute provides engaging and interactive hands-on adventures with San Francisco Bay Area marine life. Led by a team of expert marine science educators, these experiences impact students of all ages, inspiring respect and stewardship for the marine environment.”

Channel Islands Restoration –

“Channel Islands Restoration protects rare and endangered plants and animals by restoring habitat in sensitive and unique natural areas on the California Channel Islands and adjacent mainland.”

“The Surfrider Foundation is dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s ocean, waves and beaches through a powerful activist network.”

The Rob Machado Foundation –

“The Rob Machado Foundation’s primary mission is to educate and empower young people to make sustainable choices.”

The Wahine Project –

“Inspiring a global response that eliminates the barriers preventing a diversity of girls from a personal relation with the ocean and with one another.”

Ocean Defenders Alliance

“Ocean Defenders Alliance works to clean and protect marine ecosystems through documentation, education, and meaningful action. Working with affected communities, we focus primarily on the reduction and removal of man-made debris which poses serious threats to ocean wildlife and habitats.”

Although there are many more organizations Patagonia is bolstering with its latest effort – the above list spotlights some important ocean and water based causes along the California coast. The success of this action shows that it’s possible to make a difference, and protect our habitat when we funnel resources into things that matter.
